Lithuanian-born Irena Grant, who wore the national dress of the Baltic country about the size of Tasmania, said that dressing up was fun and yesterday was a good chance to see costumes from other countries.

She said that the Lithuanian costumes were hand woven with different colours and patterns to represent the various regions of the country.

Ms Grant said that she was looking for supporters to help with an ethnic radio station, called World Music Radio, being established in Launceston. The number to call was 6331 6269.

The Ven. Warwick Letchford said that about 270 people attended the service to celebrate the Good Neighbour Council, which recognised the contribution of migrants to the community.

“It’s a plea to the community to be good neighbours to new settlers and a plea to them to be good neighbours as well,” he said.

“By making good neighbours we become good friends.”

He said migrants had made an enormous contribution and cited the example of the late Roelf Vos, who arrived as a penniless migrant. His first job was skinning rabbits but he went on to establish a supermarket chain.

The Rev. Dr Philip Blake said that the Bible called on people to love each other in spite of any differences.
