Almost 11,000 tickets have been sold four weeks out from the big event, and Harmon said he expected more people to buy tickets for the once-in-a-lifetime game closer to the date.

Madder a key to Vic success

THE Victoria Country men’s team clinched a nail-biting one-point win over New Zealand in its opening match of the National Under-16 Basketball Championships in Ballarat on Saturday.

The defending champions hit the front with a basket in the final minute of the game to take victory.

Ballarat’s Lachlan Madder played a key role in the win with 11 points.

He followed that with a further 11 points and 12 assists in yesterday’s 108-45 win over Western Australia Country.

Ballarat’s other representative Alicia Verhey also performed well for the Victoria Country women’s side.

She shot 12 points in her team’s 72-78 loss to Western Australia Metro on Saturday.

Both players hit the courts again today, Verhey at 3.30pm against South Australia Metro and Madder at 7.30 against New South Wales Country.

Tournament organiser Mark Valentine hailed Saturday night’s opening ceremony a success.

The ceremony featured a performance by Aboriginal group Western Creation, and an appearance by Ballarat’s basketball Olympian Ray Borner, who began his career in the under-16 championships.

Bella Sunday scores double

A $425,000 Magic Millions purchase, Bella Sunday has been slow to mature, and part-owner Ron Finemore believes the best is yet to come. “She was a late two-year-old, but the Sunday Silences don’t usually do much until they are three-year- olds, so the best is ahead of her,” he said. “We’re optimistic.”

No concrete plans have been laid for the filly, but Finemore indicated she might be sent to Melbourne if she continued to come through her grades.
